Cross Linking

Keratoconus and Cross Linking

View Video

In the treatment of keratoconus there are several treatment options, from glasses or contact lenses, to cornea transplant. Crosslinking is one of the techniques that most ophthalmologist surgeons frequently use due to the favorable results that this procedure provides to the patient.

Crosslinking consists in impregnating the corneal stroma with riboflavin a photosensitizing substance, which is exposed to ultraviolet light, this reacts reinforcing the corneal stroma collagen links, increasing corneal biomechanical stability, stopping the keratoconus progression and therefore, reducing the possibility of needing corneal transplantation in the future.

Therefore, crosslinking is a therapeutic procedure that helps strengthen the cornea while maintaining stability, and limit the possibilities for corneal transplantation. This technique is not a refractive procedure, but nevertheless, as a side effect, a large number of patients, it can offer a significant improvement in visual acuity, without being this its main objective.

Visit your ophthalmologist at CODET Vision Institute for a personalized evaluation and we will recommend the best surgical technique for your corneal disease.
