Post-Operative Instructions

Please read the instructions below to learn about how to manage your IntraLASIK post-operative care.

As with any out-patient surgical procedure, we rely on our patients to be active participants in managing their recovery. Usually there’s a dramatic improvement in your vision within 24 hours after the initial correction. The progress may appear to be slow and your vision may fluctuate from day to day. This is normal. In most cases, it’ll take 4 to 6 weeks for your vision to stabilize and 1 to 3 months to achieve a final result (Although this varies from patient to patient). Also, you may notice that your near vision (reading or computer) is blurry. Remember, the day of surgery is for total resting, do not attempt to do any other activity.

MEDICATIONS - 3 hours after your surgery, begin to use the following eye drops:

PREDNEFRIN:

  • 1 DROP EVERY 4 HOURS FOR 5 DAYS
  • 1 DROP EVERY 8 HOURS FOR 5 DAYS
  • 1 DROP EVERY 12 HOURS FOR 5 DAYS
  • 1 DROP EVERY 24 HOURS FOR 5 DAYS

ZYMAR:

  • 1 DROP EVERY 4 HOURS FOR 5 DAYS AND THEN DISCONTINUE USE

SYSTANE FREE:

  • 1 DROP EVERY 2-4 HOURS AS REQUIRED INDEFINITELY

NOTE: Wait about 30 seconds between each medication, use the drops while you’re awake, you don’t need to wake up to apply the eye drops at night. Ask someone to help you to apply the drops.

PROTECTIVE EYE SHIELDS:

You must wear the eye shields all day and night the day of surgery and peel them off only to apply the drops and put them back on again. You can take them off the next day when you wake up, put one more dose of both drops, and come to your check up with sunglasses, you must wear the eye shields just for sleeping 3 additional nights.

WE INSIST THAT YOU REST COMPLETELY THE DAY OF THE SURGERY WITHOUT ANY OTHER ACTIVITY.

RECOMENDATIONS:

  • DO NOT TOUCH OR RUB YOUR EYES AT ALL
  • No lifting of any heavy objects for 1 MONTH.
  • No exercise for 7 days.
  • On the 7th day, you may begin jogging or running.
  • You may read or use computer, but the less you do either, the better. You may watch  TV for a while, but avoid staring for long periods of time.

OTHER IMPORTANT RECOMMENDATIONS:

  • Go home and rest after your surgery. The medication you received will often make you sleepy. Take the opportunity to rest your eyes by taking a 2-3 hour nap.
  • It’s okay to shower, just keep your eyes closed as you would normally to protect your eyes from the water, soap or shampoo. Wash your face, just remember not to rub your eyes or tighten them. If water, soap or shampoo should get into your eyes, apply large amounts of the lubricant, and if you should require assistance, call us.
  • Do not wear eye make up for the next 5 days from surgery.
  • Do not swim or practice any water activities for 15 days from surgery, this includes water from swimming pools, Jacuzzi (hot tubs), lakes and the ocean.
  • Do not practice any kind of contact sport for the first 15 days. If you do practice a contact sport, always wear protective goggles.
  • Avoid any kind of direct contact whit pets to prevent any risk, for the first 15 days.
  • Remember to fully and gently blink your eyes every few minutes. That will help you focus better and maintain the lubrication in your eyes. You may feel dryness for up to several months. Artificial tears (Optive Endura) may be used as needed to alleviate this.
  • Red spots are normal following surgery. They will gradually disappear over a period of two weeks.
  • Wear sunglasses with UV protection. Your eyes may be sensitive to light the first few days after the procedure.
  • Avoid dusty, smoky or heated environments for 2 days.
  • Driving is acceptable as soon as 1-day post-op only if you are comfortable and feel safe with your level of correction. Night vision may be reduced during the first weeks after surgery.
  • Discomfort is all you are expected to feel. If you experience sudden pain, flashing lights, floaters, discharge, increased redness, swelling, visual decline or any symptoms not described above, do not hesitate to call us. You may not require an office visit, but being able to discuss them with any doctor of this clinic will put your mind at ease.
  • Call your physician immediately at: (619) 662-4999 or (858) 692-6192.
