Timely Detection for Ocular Damage in Diabetic Patients Week 2017 5/28/2017

With the participation of researchers, renowned experts, and society at large, Diabetic Eye Week, organized by Colegio de Oftalmología de Baja California (COBC), took place from May 21st to May 25th. The main goal of this event was to help the community learn more about diabetes and its impact on visual health.

Like several doctors at CODET Vision Institute, Ophthalmologist Irma Zamudio is a member of COBC. She participated in this event where she warned in an interview with the media that there are statistics that show a high number of diabetics in Mexico, and the state of Baja California is not an exception.

“Mexico ranks around 7th place at a worldwide level, 9th in Baja California. 12% of the Mexican population has diabetes and only 1 in 2 is diagnosed. We are talking about more than 20% of the population. It is an alarming figure,” she said.

During Diabetic Eye Week, people with this disease in Tijuana were encouraged to go to the activities, talks and seminars in the fifth edition of this awareness week. Most important was to urge people to get themselves checked to detect possible retinopathy since it appears in 24% of patients.

She also stressed that specialists look to avoid and prevent any complication if the patient ends up having diabetes, since 24% of people who have this disease will have retinopathy, considered the first cause of irreversible diabetes.

“50% of people who have this disease detected late lose their vision completely in less than three years,” the doctor emphasized, since diabetes is the biggest cause of irreversible blindness in Mexico.

COBC started the Week with a community walk whose starting point was in Torre Agua Caliente all the way up to Teniente Guerrero Park in order to raise awareness about the effects, prevention, and how to take care of oneself and one’s eyes when diabetes is present.
