Cross-Border Business Forum: Binational Healthcare and Medical Tourism 8/16/2017

Cross-Border Business Forum: Binational Healthcare and Medical Tourism

There is something huge going on in the Cali-Baja region. Thousands of people cross its border daily for many reasons, including people from California and other parts of the United States or even from other parts of the world. This is a huge trend in medicine and is expected to grow in the following years because of many reasons that were discussed in this forum.

Medical tourism is the flow of people who travel from one place to another in search of high quality medical attention.

Medical tourism in Mexico is growing and it is estimated that it will continue to grow in the coming years. Nowadays, more than a million of American cross the Baja California border every year to receive quality medical attention at a more competitive price.

There are different reasons why patients travel to Mexico from the US in search of medical care. For some medical tourists, it is because they don’t have health insurance or because the insurance that they have includes deductibles or copayments that are too high for certain procedures. Other medical tourists, like all Hispanic Americans living in the USA, travel because of cultural and language reasons, while others look for cutting edge technology available in Mexico and not in the US. There are also some that travel to Mexico because the quality in medical attention that they receive at a particular price justifies the trip.

Whatever the reason, the fact is that Baja California, and specifically the city of Tijuana, is emerging as worldwide leader in health care for tourists. Not only because of its geographic location with San Diego but also because of the commitment and collaboration of health-related businesses, in both sides of the border, to make of this Cali-Baja region one of the most important in medical tourism in the world.

CODET Vision Institute, with more than 30 years of having been established in Tijuana and having seen hundreds of thousands of medical tourists of the USA and other parts of the world, was invited to participate in the Cross-Border Business Forum: Binational Health and Medical Tourism that took place on August 2th in the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Heidy Salum, Head of Binational Affairs of the Baja California Government, said: “11% of the visitors of Baja look for medical care,” and added that “Baja California is definitively the leader in medical tourism in Mexico, being second place worldwide.”

There was also talk about the competitiveness of health tourism offers not only because of geographical position, as said by Dr. Ricardo Vega, president of Clúster de Servicios Médicos y de Salud de Baja California.

The panel agreed that one of the areas in which Tijuana specializes is in Ophthalmology. Daniel Chayet, CEO of CODET Vision Institute, emphasized that in the case of CODET Vision Institute, its doctors have access to the latest technologies of the medical device companies in Southern California before they are approved for use in the United States. This represents a very important factor when medical tourists make a decision to come to CODET in search of better medical care.

He also added that, “Tijuana is a hidden gem” and he pointed out that medical tourism in the region is going up.
