September is Healthy Aging Month

When someone talks about aging gracefully, there’s not only an implication regarding mental and physical health but arriving at an age with our bodies as strong as they can possibly be. Our vision is one of the most important and delicate parts of this aging process and, as such, it needs to be taken care of to the best of our ability to avoid as many vision-related problems as possible.

Despite the importance of this, however, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, who has unveiled September as Healthy Aging Month, reveals that nearly two out of three American adults have eye or vision problems, while the Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Geografía (INEGI)  reports that 48.5 million people in Mexico require visual medical assistance.

The most efficient way in which we can all avoid further complications is by prevention. Regular eye checkups are as important as any other health related checkup when it comes to preventing and treating eye disease and conditions such as blurry vision, flashes of light, or double vision. Some of the most common eye-related diseases such as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and cataracts increase in probability the more we age.

Due to the eye’s complexity even when there seems to be no problem, it is essential for it to be checked as thoroughly as possible: just because your eye doesn’t hurt, it doesn’t mean it's healthy. Cataracts, in particular, are one of the most common eye conditions among older adults and may first appear when you are in your 40’s or 50’s. At this point, they will be small and will not bother you; it is most important then to have them checked early to avoid further symptoms, even possible complications or accidents due to diminished, vision especially in low light conditions.

Growing old can be a fun, interesting journey and it is important for everybody that it happens with the least amount of complications possible and the best quality of life. Seeing your ophthalmologist to watch over your eye health, receiving the best quality care, and detecting early symptoms of bigger problems are all effective strategies to take into account when it comes to your vision, your health, and your life.
