CODET at the X International Glaucoma Course 9/13/2017

CODET at the X International Glaucoma Course

From August 3rd to August 5th, the Mexican College of Glaucoma’s X International Course took place in Hotel Camino Real Polanco in Mexico City.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), glaucoma is the main cause of irreversible blindness worldwide and it affects between 2% to 4% of the population in Mexico. Due to this, ophthalmologists all over the world get together to talk, discuss, debate, and agree on all topics related to this disease.

The Mexican College of Glaucoma has specialists who work and campaign because they are worried about the visual health of Mexicans and are looking for the best therapeutic options for glaucoma treatment.

Dr. Marina Ramírez, head of the Glaucoma Department at CODET Vision Institute, was invited to make a presentation at this course, where she shared her experience with Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgeries with CyPass Device for Open-Angle Glaucoma.

CyPass is a minimally invasive medical device called Micro-Stent CyPass by Alcon, which was recently approved by the FDA in the USA for its use in patients with mild to moderate glaucoma, in conjunction with the cataract surgery.

The Micro-Stent CyPass is implanted during cataract surgery and is specially designed to diminish ocular pressure, increasing the exiting watery discharge through one of the eye’s natural drainage pathways; that way, allowing the release of excessive ocular liquid caused by high pressure inside the eye.

All of this is accomplished with minimum alteration of the tissue since it is a Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery, which allows recovery time to be much faster.

The Glaucoma Department at CODET Vision Institute evaluated the Micro-Stent CyPass when it was a prototype, knowing it was very promising technology and that it would represent a greatly innovative option for patients who are candidates for this type of glaucoma surgery.

Last June, CODET Vision Institute was the first Ophthalmology clinic in Mexico who had the opportunity to implant this device, already approved for commercial use in Mexico. It was a resounding success and these results and experiences were shared in the International Glaucoma Course.
