CODET shares experience with Combined Glaucoma and Cataract Surgery at ALACCSA-R Congress 2017 11/8/2017

The Latin American Association of Cataract Surgeons, Anterior Segment and Refractive (ALACCSA-R) organized the IX International Congress of the Northern Hemisphere, Central America and the Caribbean, which took place at the Hotel Camino Real Polanco in Mexico City, from October 19 to 21, 2017.

Recognized speakers from countries such as Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Spain, Guatemala, Paraguay, Peru, the Dominican Republic, Venezuela and, of course, prominent Mexican ophthalmologists, participated with conferences that made the scientific agenda an excellent update opportunity on the latest technologies, in diagnosis and treatment, worldwide.

Dr. Marina Ramírez, Head of Glaucoma Service at CODET Vision Institute, was invited to perform a live surgery at the congress during Alcon Day, with more than 300 ophthalmologists attending the event. Dr. Ramirez shared experience and techniques with Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery with CyPass Device for Open Angle Glaucoma in combination with cataract surgery, teaming with Dr. Arnaldo Espaillat, from Dominican Republic.

CyPass is a minimally invasive medical device called Micro-Stent CyPass by Alcon, which was recently approved by the FDA in the USA for its use in patients with mild to moderate glaucoma, in conjunction with the cataract surgery.

The Micro-Stent CyPass is implanted during cataract surgery and is specially designed to diminish ocular pressure, increasing the exiting watery discharge through one of the eye’s natural drainage pathways; that way, allowing the release of excessive ocular liquid caused by high pressure inside the eye.

All of this is accomplished with minimum alteration of the tissue since it is a Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery, which allows recovery time to be much faster.

The Glaucoma Department at CODET Vision Institute evaluated the Micro-Stent CyPass when it was a prototype, knowing it was very promising technology and that it would represent a greatly innovative option for patients who are candidates for this type of glaucoma surgery.

Last June, CODET Vision Institute was the first Ophthalmology clinic in Mexico who had the opportunity to implant this device, already approved for commercial use in Mexico. It was a resounding success and these results and experiences were shared in the ALACCSA Congress.
