Introducing the Light Adjustable Lens 11/3/2019

Last October, the Light Adjustable Lens was finally approved for its commercial use and is now available at CODET Vision Institute.

The LAL is the most advanced Intraocular Lens for Cataract Surgery and Near Vision Correction

The Light Adjustable Lens is an IOL designed to help patients with Cataracts or who suffer from poor Near Vision (55 years of age or older) achieve independence from their glasses or contact lenses. The LAL is implanted in a typical cataract surgery or lens replacement surgery procedure, like any other Premium IOL.

Light Adjustable Lens (LAL)

A particular feature of the Light Adjustable Lens is that, approximately 2 weeks after being implanted inside the eye, a refractive adjustment can be performed on the lens. This means that the exact refractive power of the lens that is now implanted inside the eye can be adjusted to achieve supreme visual precision. This adjustment is done by using a Light Delivery Device (LDD) to apply ultraviolet light directly to the newly implanted lens. The LAL has a specific silicon-based material that reacts to this ultraviolet light and allows its shape to be changed to achieve the exact refraction the patient needs to have great vision. The lens can correct myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism, while also providing great near vision.

The technology used in the LAL was invented by Professor Robert Grubbs, who received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2005 for his work on olefin metathesis. In other words, the LAL is the only intraocular lens that can be described as having Nobel Prize winning technology.

Dr. Arturo Chayet has been using this lens since 2002. Both he and his team at CODET Vision Institute carried out clinical trial studies that led the Mexican government and the United States FDA to approve the commercial use of this lens recently. Since 2002, CODET Vision Institute has implanted more than 2,000 LALs with spectacular results.

Dr. Arturo Chayet receives an award from RxSight for his excellent work with the company during the last 17+ years: from performing the first Light Adjustable Lens implant in 2002
to its commercial launch in 2019. “Our success has been possible due to his experience, support, and dedication.”
