Sunglasses. The Importance of Ultraviolet Rays Protection for Your Vision 2/5/2018

Several scientific studies indicate that spending long hours in the sun without eye protection can damage your eyes. Due to this, ophthalmologists recommend the use of sunglasses that can filter ultraviolet rays (UV) by 99 percent or more to avoid the more damaging effects that can happen due to sun exposure in the eyes.

Among the most serious effects there are:

  • Age related macular degeneration. It is a condition that worsens with aging and other factors, such as UV rays, and mainly affects the retina. This can lead to loss of central vision and blindness. It is inoperable, which is why it is important to protect vision from ultraviolet light.
  • Cataracts. Cataract acceleration is another risk that are associated with excessive exposure to ultraviolet light.
  • Pterygium. The sun tends to be related with patients with pterygium, a condition that extends from the ocular globe to the cornea.

Sunglasses play a key role in our eye health. They are the way in which we protect our rays from sunrays, which can cause irreversible damage to our eyesight. The best sunglasses offer 100 percent UV absorption, have better optic quality and are impact resistant.

Sunglasses must be used at any moment one is outside especially during summer, when one is at the beach or in water, during winter sports practice and when taking medicine that causes light sensitivity.

However, if the source of light is too intense sunglasses will not be able to protect you; this happens with arc welding, tanning beds and lights, snowfields or gazing directly at the sun, especially during a solar eclipse. Looking at these light sources without special protection can cause damage in the retina, causing a permanent loss of central vision.

Not-prescribed sunglasses tend to be darker and cause dilation in the pupil, especially in patients with clear eyes. There is more dilation the darker it is and if it doesn’t have the adequate filters, more radiation enters the eyes causing significant damage, even worse that if one hadn’t used sunglasses at all.
