What is LASIK?

LASIK is the common term used to describe Laser Vision Correction.  LASIK uses an excimer laser to reshape the cornea, in order to eliminate myopiahyperopiaastigmatism, or presbyopia.

At CODET, we performed the 1st LASIK procedure on the western half of the North American continent and the second procedure on the entire North American continent in 1994. Additionally, Dr. Chayet invented IntraLASIK in 1995, the gold standard in Laser Vision Correction.

IntraLASIK is different from LASIK in that it is completely blade-free creating the flap. In IntraLASIK, the flap is made by the separation of the corneal tissue performed with a femtosecond laser ray, which is completely computer controlled and supported by the Inralase software. The results are extraordinary, delivering maximum safety to the patient and a level of precision that is unparalleled for the surgeon.

Every procedure is controlled according to the specific visual problem of each patient, so that the surgeon designs the procedure according to the patient’s corneal anatomy. LASIK vs IntraLASIK

For many years, LASIK has been the technique most used in refractive surgery treatments, however, as is the case with all technology, it was improved here at CODET in 1995, when we began developing IntraLASIK, which is now the standard in Laser Eye Surgery worldwide.
 

Key Differences between LASIK and IntraLASIK:

Traditional LASIK: It uses a blade called a microkeratome, in order to make the corneal flap, it requires the patient to have a thicker cornea. Generally speaking, there is greater risk for the patient with LASIK.

IntraLASIK: It uses a femtosecond laser, capable of separating tissues at the molecular level, making healing much faster and involving fewer risks for the patient. With traditional LASIK, the most common challenges were:

  • Patients who do not have sufficient corneal thickness.
  • Corneas that are very flat or curved.

On the other hand, with IntraLASIK, the margin of error is reduced since the depth of tissue separation is controlled with a computer at all times and thus creating an appropriate "flap,” thus increasing safety and precision.
