Retina Surgery (Vitrectomy)

Procedure

Retina Surgery (Vitrectomy)

Most retina conditions can be successfully resolved through the use of minimally-invasive microsurgery using state-of-the-art technology.

An Overview: Retina Surgery (Vitrectomy)

At a Glance:

  • The procedure has been used since the 1970s, with many technological and medical advances having been made since then
  • Surgery is dependent on the patient’s other conditions and contributing factors
  • Micro-surgical tools work through an incision about the width of an eyelash to repair certain eye conditions
  • Surgery can help prevent vision loss and reduces the chances of recurrence
  • Our retinologists at CODET Vision Institute, in Tijuana, Mexico, are skilled surgeons with vitrectomy and retina surgery experience.

A vitrectomy is a retina surgery in which the retinologist uses microsurgical tools to remove the gel-like fluid inside the eye (vitreous) in order to make needed repairs, and then refills it with a safe gas or solution, which is then naturally replaced by the eye’s own fluid. This procedure has been in use since the 1970s, and advances in technology and medical understanding of it have combined to make it a routine, safe, and consistent procedure.

Almost always, a vitrectomy is called for in order to reach an underlying problem, therefore the length of surgery depends upon other conditions. Vitrectomy itself is outpatient in nature, has little or no pain, and barely affects the health of the eye.

Benefits and Highlights:

  • Treats the disease, avoiding visual loss
  • Reduces the likelihood of recurrence
  • Minimizes the risk of disease complications
  • Minimally invasive with the most advanced instruments and technology
  • Little or no pain with local anesthesia

What to Expect: About Retina Surgery

We only perform Retina Surgery on patients when we think it is in their best interest. Therefore, all patients will consult directly with their CODET doctor, go over examination results, and reach an informed decision, together. Each patient is unique, and so are their conditions. We personalize the treatment for each patient, but, in general, you can expect:

  • A retina exam that may include OCT (ocular coherence tomography), fluorescein angiography, retinal photography, and/or ultrasound
  • A discussion of the risks, benefits, and alternatives with your surgeon
  • An internal medicine specialist will evaluate your general health and will advise on any considerations for the surgery
  • Most adults have only minimal sedation because they are more comfortable with light relaxation and wish to avoid side effects of general anesthesia
  • To schedule a follow-up visit the day after surgery (patients will require a driver the day of surgery)

INSIGHTS: A PATIENT STORY

Mr. Javier Martínez had very poor vision due to problems in his retina. After four surgeries with Dr. Sergio Groman, our Retina specialist, his vision has returned almost completely.

I came here in June, and I had a spill in my left eye. Now I am going for my 4th surgery, but I have improved a lot. When I first came here, I couldn't see clearly and couldn't walk. It was difficult for me, now I have regained my confidence.
