Myopia, also referred to as nearsightedness, is a very common refractive error. Nearsighted people see things best when they are close up but have trouble seeing things that are farther away.

Myopia is a common refractive error that is also known as nearsightedness. A refractive error occurs when the eye does not bend light properly. Light does not focus correctly on the retina, so images are not clear. In myopia, close objects look clear but distant objects appear blurred. 

Myopia is an eye focusing disorder, not an eye disease. It can be caused by a cornea that is too steeply curved, by an eye that is too long, or by a combination of both problems. People with mild to moderate myopia can see things clearly nearby, but people with severe myopia may only be able to see objects clearly when they are just a few inches away.

Myopia is a common refractive error among children, but many parents are unaware that myopia can worsen as children grow, impacting their learning and development. Regular eye exams can diagnose and track myopia in children so treatment can be adjusted appropriately to the child’s changing needs.
