What is ophthalmopediatrics?
Is the branch of ophthalmology that specializes in treating children’s vision. Children are not small adults. Their eyes have other diseases, other causes, and other treatments and follow ups.

What diseases and conditions does ophthalmopediatrics treat?
Congenital cataracts, congenital glaucoma, retinopathy of prematurity, strabismus, amblyopia, refractive errors (myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism), infections, and ocular allergies.

When does a child need to receive their first checkup?
By law, every child must be checked by an ophthalmologist at 4 weeks of age. If they don’t have anything and everything is normal, they must get an annual checkup. In premature children this checkup is especially important because they might develop retinopathy of prematurity.

Should we worry about frequent tearing in children?
Checkups are very important. Since a very young age, children might tear up a lot. This may be due to a lacrimal obstruction and in many occasions, the only thing this will cause is constant tearing. However, there are other occasions in which a lot of tears might gather up, which may become infected. These frequent infections or conjunctivitis require treatment. There is another pathology called congenital glaucoma, whose one of its symptoms is frequent tearing, and it must be checked by an ophthalmologist.

What are the refractive errors that one can have as a child?
Myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism.

What are the characteristics a child might have if they don’t see well and needs to use glasses?
Kids don’t notice that they are seeing incorrectly because that’s how they’ve seen all their life and for them that is normal and, generally speaking, they are not going to say anything about it. Teachers are usually the ones who notice due to their school behavior, though if there is a history of using glasses in the family it is very likely that they will need them. An ophthalmo-pediatrician will let you know what are the things to look out for. In older kids, it is very common that they get headaches and get tired of reading.

Can a laser surgery (LASIK) be performed during childhood?
No, it cannot be done during childhood. One has to wait for eyes to mature and for vision to stabilize. This surgery is performed in patients 18 years or older if they are candidates.

Why are there children with stye?
Because a gland close to the eye clogs due to being touched by dirty hands or by some diseases of the palpebral edge. It is very important to check on them because the earlier it is found, it is easier to resolve with an easy treatment (drops, massages). If it is not resolved in this manner, a surgery must be performed.

What are the most common causes of red eye in children?
It may be conjunctivitis, dry eye, and fixed vision on electronic devices.

What is amblyopia?
The difference between one eye and the other in visual acuity from two lines of vision.

What causes amblyopia?
When an eye requires a lot of prescription and the other one doesn’t, the brain eliminates the blurry image and will only see with the eye that looks clear. The visual pathway starts to deteriorate in the eye that is not developing since it doesn’t have any optic correction.

Can amblyopia be corrected?
Yes, with glasses and sensorial therapies with patches.

What is strabismic amblyopia?
It can be caused by strabismus. It can be corrected with good glasses and therapy with patches, as well as dealing with the motor question of strabismus with surgery or botulinic toxins.

Can a child’s vision recover from amblyopia?
If it is detected early and there is constant checkups it is easier to recover. If an eye loses its vision, the older the kid, it will be harder to recover the vision and they will have low vision for the rest of their life.

Why is it important for premature children to check their vision?
Oxygen is applied to premature children, which is a risk factor in developing a disease called retinopathy of prematurity. If this retinopathy is not detected in time, it can detach the child’s retina. This is why its checkup is very important.

What does eyelid surgery entail?
It is an incision that depends on where in the eyelid the operation is required (upper or lower).
