CODET Vision Institute Research Featured in “Cornea”Ophthalmology Journal
This case study presented an innovative treatment using Tenon flaps, that restored sight in a patient with corneal and scleral thinning after pterygium surgery.
At CODET Vision Institute, we are committed to offering advanced treatments for even the most complex eye conditions. One recent case shows how innovative surgical techniques can restore vision and eye health when standard treatments are no longer effective.

What is Pterygium Surgery?
Pterygium is a benign growth on the surface of the eye that may cause irritation, redness, or blurred vision. Many patients undergo pterygium removal surgery to restore comfort and clear sight. In the past, doctors sometimes combined surgery with beta irradiation (a type of localized radiation) to reduce the risk of recurrence. Unfortunately, this older method can sometimes cause long-term complications, even years later.
A Patient’s Story
A 55-year-old man came to CODET Vision Institute with serious complications in his only seeing eye—progressive corneal thinning and tissue loss caused by beta irradiation from a surgery performed more than 10 years earlier. Despite multiple treatments elsewhere, his condition kept worsening and was threatening his vision.
Innovative Treatment: Posterior Rotational Tenon Flaps
Our cornea specialists identified that the main problem was lack of blood supply (avascularity) to the affected tissue. This made traditional grafts and medications less effective.
To restore circulation and protect the eye, our team performed a posterior rotational Tenon flap procedure, combined with a corneal patch and a conjunctival graft. This innovative technique brings healthy, vascularized tissue to the damaged area, allowing it to heal naturally.
The Results
After surgery, the patient’s vision improved to 20/25—nearly perfect in his only seeing eye. The procedure stabilized the eye, strengthened the cornea and sclera, and allowed him to safely return to daily life.
Published in a Prestigious Journal
This case report—“Posterior Rotational Tenon Flaps for Corneal and Scleral Sterile Stromalysis After Pterygium Surgery”—was published by our team of Cornea Fellows under the mentorship of Dr. Arturo Chayet, founder and Medical Director at CODET, and Dr. Erik Navas, Director of the Cornea Service.
It appeared in Cornea, the Journal of Cornea and External Disease—an internationally recognized peer-reviewed journal. Publication in such a respected journal means our work has undergone rigorous scientific review and been recognized worldwide as a valuable contribution to eye care. For our patients, it’s proof that CODET treatments meet the highest international standards.
