Combined Pterygium and Cataract Surgery: New Insights from CODET Cornea Team
The study explored simultaneous pterygium and cataract removal combined with Light Adjustable Lens implantation, advancing innovative eye care solutions.
Our expert team, led by Dr. Erik Navas Villar, published a study evaluating simultaneous pterygium and cataract surgery combined with LAL implantation. The retrospective study of 18 eyes from 14 patients showed promising results, including significant improvements in vision and refractive accuracy, as well as reduction of corneal astigmatism three months after surgery.
These findings suggest that this combined approach could be a valuable alternative to staged surgeries. Especially for patients facing logistical or financial challenges.

Pterygium, Cataract Surgery and the Light Adjustable Lens
If you’ve been diagnosed with both pterygium — a benign growth on the eye’s surface — and cataracts, you might be worried about undergoing two separate surgeries. Traditionally, these procedures are done in stages, which means more visits, longer recovery, and higher costs.
The Light Adjustable Lens is a revolutionary intraocular lens implanted during cataract surgery that can be precisely adjusted after surgery using a special Light Delivery Device (LDD). This allows surgeons to fine-tune vision based on healing and individual needs, providing clearer and more accurate sight.
Innovation and Research at CODET Vision Institute
At CODET Vision Institute, research and innovation are central to advancing ophthalmic care. This study exemplifies our dedication to exploring new surgical techniques that could one day improve patient outcomes and offer more efficient treatment options. While this procedure is currently under investigation, our ongoing commitment ensures we remain at the forefront of ophthalmology advancements.
What This Means for the Future of Eye Care
The study highlights how combining advanced technologies like the Light Adjustable Lens with innovative surgical approaches may redefine how multiple eye conditions are treated. Continued research like this paves the way for safer, more precise, and patient-friendly ophthalmic procedures in the near future.
