Smoking, Vaping, and Eye Health: What You Should Know
Did you know smoking and vaping can damage your vision? Discover how tobacco use affects eye health, from dry eye to macular degeneration.
Smoking tobacco can cause lung disease, heart disease, and many other serious health problems, but did you know that smoking can also damage your eyes?
Vaping has different risks compared to smoking, as the liquids used in vaping devices contain higher levels of nicotine than cigarettes. Although they do not produce tar or carbon monoxide, they contain other chemicals with mostly unknown negative effects.
Here are some of the eye problems that can be exacerbated by tobacco use and vaping.

1. Dry Eye
This problem occurs when the eyes do not produce enough tears or they evaporate too quickly. Smoking can intensify the symptoms of dry eye, causing itching, stinging, burning, or redness in the eyes.
2. Cataracts
Smoking increases the risk of developing cataracts, which happens when the lens of the eye becomes opaque. This causes blurred vision and can make colors appear dull or discolored.
3. Diabetic Retinopathy and Vascular Oclusions
Smokers who also suffer from diabetes are at a higher risk of developing diabetic retinopathy, which occurs when the blood vessels in the eye are damaged. This causes blurred or distorted vision, and in some cases, blindness. Vascular occlusion occurs when there is a partial blockage of the veins that drain blood and other fluids from within the retina.
4. Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)
AMD occurs when the macula, the part of the retina responsible for central vision, becomes damaged. This results in the loss of central vision and difficulty seeing fine details. Studies show that smokers and former smokers have a higher risk of developing AMD compared to those who have never smoked.

Smoking and vaping not only affects overall health but also have a significant impact on eye health. Both habits can exacerbate a variety of eye problems. Although vaping may seem less harmful compared to smoking, its use of high levels of nicotine and other chemicals presents considerable risks to eye health. The best way to protect your eyes and your overall health is to avoid tobacco and vaping products.
