XXVII International Cataract, Cornea and Refractive Surgery Symposium in Tijuana 12/1/2017

Last 1st and 2nd of December the XXVII International Cataract, Cornea and Refractive Surgery Symposium took place where some of our doctors, researchers, fellows and ex fellows reunited to exhibit, talk, and show the most recent and important developments among these topics.

This International Symposium, organized and sponsored by Colegio de Oftalmología de Baja California, is an event that came to be partly because of the altruism of the doctors of Baja California, with their objective being to inform about the most recent discoveries regarding refractive surgery and cataracts. Since then, several generations have been and are part of this conference and have had the opportunity to learn and show the knowledge they have acquired throughout their career and experience.

Being this an opportunity to interact and disclose relevant information for the future of ophthalmology in benefit of the patients, several doctors of international fame were an important part of this conference: Dr. Charles Stephen Foster (founder and president of the Ocular Immunology and Uveitis Foundation), Dr. Mihir Parikh (founder partner of Advanced Ophthalmology Institute), Dr. Sadeer Hannush (from Wills Eye Hospital, the oldest ophthalmological center still running in the USA) and Dr. Victor Perez (from Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, the #1 ophthalmological center in the United States, according to U.S. News & World Report).

Meanwhile, CODET was represented by Dr. René Cervantes, Dr. Linda Avena, Dr. Irma Zamudio and Dr. Arturo Chayet, where they talked about the benefits and indications of current ophthalmological technologies and the ones that are to come. At the same time, always thinking of the patients, they presented several significant cases that gave the opportunity to doctors and researchers, both national and international, to know more about what’s relevant in the world of eye health.

The topics that were brought up ranged from inflammatory illnesses to corneal ulcers from the herpes virus to dry eye but, certainly, the most relevant topic was the one concerning surgeries. In particular, Dr. Chayet spoke about the difference between IntraLASIK surgery (FemtoLASIK) and SMILE, as well as the importance of the Femtosecond Z8 Laser regarding cataract surgeries, IntraLASIK and eye strain: in contrast with previous methods, Femtosecond Z8 allows doctors to make a better separation of the tissues during surgery, which improves the post-op results since it reduces the stress caused by them.

At the same time, the Symposium was an opportunity for doctors and researchers to continue establishing Tijuana beyond just a tourist attraction to a city where ophthalmological innovation is the norm, where it is born, developed and expanded. The main goal of this conference is reinforced with the collaboration not only of the doctors from CODET but with all scientists, staff and doctors, national and international, that made it possible for this symposium to be a success for the future of all ophthalmological patients in the world.
