World Glaucoma Week: Why Early Detection and Expert Care Can Save Your Sight
Don't wait until it's too late. This World Glaucoma Week, learn why early detection is key and how CODET's specialized team and cutting-edge treatments are your best defense against glaucoma.
Every year, the second week of March unites eye health professionals, patients, and communities around the world for World Glaucoma Week — a global initiative organized by the World Glaucoma Association (WGA) with a single, urgent goal: to eliminate preventable blindness caused by glaucoma. This year, the campaign runs from March 8 to 14, 2026, under the powerful theme “Uniting for a Glaucoma-Free World.”
Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that progressively damage the optic nerve — the critical pathway that carries visual information from the eye to the brain. It is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide, currently affecting approximately 80 million people globally, with projections suggesting that number will climb to more than 112 million by 2040 as populations age. Despite these alarming figures, glaucoma remains drastically underdiagnosed: roughly half of all people living with glaucoma do not know they have it.

Why Regular Eye Exams Are Your Best Defense
The most important thing you can do to protect yourself from glaucoma is straightforward: see your ophthalmologist regularly. Because glaucoma typically presents no warning signs in its early stages, a comprehensive eye examination is the only reliable way to detect it before irreversible damage takes hold.
Most eye care guidelines recommend that adults over 40 receive a comprehensive eye exam at least every two years. For those in higher-risk categories, annual exams are strongly advised. Risk factors for glaucoma include:
- Age over 40 years
- Family history of glaucoma (first-degree relatives face up to 10 times the average risk)
- Elevated intraocular pressure (IOP)
- Diabetes or high blood pressure
- Prolonged use of corticosteroid medications
- Previous eye injuries or surgeries
A late diagnosis means less vision to save. The earlier glaucoma is identified, the more treatment options are available and the more effectively your doctor can halt or slow its progression. Do not wait for symptoms — by the time peripheral vision begins to fade, considerable nerve damage has already occurred. Your next eye exam could be the appointment that preserves your sight for life.
