Innovation in Glaucoma Surgery: The Paul® Glaucoma Implant Arrives at CODET
CODET Vision Institute continues advancing ophthalmic care with one of the latest technologies for glaucoma treatment in Baja California.
At CODET Vision Institute, we continue expanding access to cutting-edge ophthalmic technology for patients with complex eye conditions.
Recently, our team performed the implantation of the Paul® Glaucoma Implant (PGI), one of the latest innovations in glaucoma surgery, making us the first center in Baja California to use this advanced technology for glaucoma treatment. In addition, this innovative implant is now available for patients at CODET Vision Institute.
Currently, the Paul® Glaucoma Implant is not yet available in the United States, positioning CODET as one of the few centers in the region with access to this cutting-edge technology.

What Is Glaucoma and Why Early Treatment Matters
Glaucoma is a progressive disease that damages the optic nerve and is one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness worldwide. In many cases, it develops silently, without noticeable symptoms in its early stages.
The main goal of glaucoma treatment is to lower intraocular pressure in order to protect vision and slow disease progression. Depending on the severity of the condition, treatment options may include:
- Prescription eye drops
- Laser procedures
- Conventional glaucoma surgery
- Advanced glaucoma drainage implants
When intraocular pressure cannot be adequately controlled with medications, laser therapy, or traditional surgery, drainage implants can provide an effective solution for preserving vision.
What Is the Paul Glaucoma Implant?
The Paul® Glaucoma Implant (PGI) is a next-generation glaucoma drainage device designed to improve pressure control in patients with refractory or complex glaucoma.
Compared to traditional glaucoma implants, the PGI features an innovative design intended to provide safer and more controlled aqueous humor drainage.
Key advantages of the Paul® Glaucoma Implant include:
- Smaller tube diameter
- Improved control of aqueous flow
- Lower risk of ocular hypotony (excessively low eye pressure)
- Potentially reduced trauma to intraocular structures
Its refined design allows for more precise fluid management and may contribute to improved postoperative safety in selected patients.
