CODET announces the creation of the Rehabilitation Clinic for patients who had Radial Keratotomy 11/23/2016

CODET Vision Institute, launches the Rehabilitation Clinic for patients with Radial Keratotomy (RK).

Tijuana BC

November 23th, 2016

Radial Keratotomy (RK) was the most commonly used technique for the correction of myopia and astigmatism between 1975 and 1995. Over one million people between the ages of 40-70 have had RK. The surgical technique consists of the surgeon manually creating incisions in the cornea using diamond blades. Usually, 4-8 corneal incisions are made in order to flatten the corneal curvature and correct myopia. The results of RK were mainly successful in the vast majority of cases. However, over the years, patients with presbyopia (the loss of near vision due to aging) suffered from farsightedness, and in some cases, irregular astigmatism due to the pronounced scarring.

At CODET, we have developed different techniques to counteract and improve the vision of patients that received RK several decades ago:

  • For low prescriptions, we use a special treatment with the NIDEK Excimer laser to perform Photo Refractive Keratotomy (PRK).
  • For higher prescriptions, we rely on modern versions of the Staar Surgical Implantable Contact Lens (ICL).
  • Finally, for those extreme cases where the  scar tissue of the incisions has created irregular astigmatism and the patient cannot tolerate a special contact lens, and therefore both the visual acuity and quality of vision has affected, CODET has developed a unique and rare Deep Lamellar Keratoplasty (DALK) technique assisted by the Ziemer LDV Z8 Femtosecond Laser, allowing for an excellent recovery of both visual acuity and visual quality.

If you or someone you know his a post-RK patient and is currently experiencing visual problems, do not hesitate to contact us to get a one-on-one appointment with our expert corneal surgeons for an in-depth assessment of your visual condition to determine if you are a candidate for any of the mentioned techniques.
